The Evolution Of The Industrial Age Evan
Before the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century furniture was entirely handmade. It meant a great skill and physical effort. The development of custom made furniture and craftsman had an important role in society. With the advent of industrial production, artisans began to disappear and become workers.
There have been 5000 years of handcrafted furniture if we take as a starting point to ancient Egypt, around 3000 BC In this construction on a small scale shows the influence that religion had in their design.
The importance of craftsmanship is that today's designers did not invent furniture desks, tables, chairs, etc.. Each of them created from an existing concept. Industrial design did not create the bedroom and its furniture, did not create the lounges and chairs, but endowed him with a greater number of production and in some cases of a stronger material. The craftsmanship was full of wealth, particularly cultural and symbolic. For many crafts suggests a mix of art and design is not unreasonable if one considers the wonderful furniture created a lot of work.
Those responsible for designing and building handcrafted furniture were the weavers, blacksmiths and carpenters, and they did using the available resources they could use to accomplish this task. These were custom-made to last a long time and began to work on them once the craftsman received the request of customers. They were very different origins of these and therefore their needs were different. The price of handcrafted furniture was not economical because, obviously, to build needed many hours.
Handcrafted furniture, being made entirely by hand, had their edges and contours with some irregularity. For example, this can be noted at the edge of a chair. There is also a very noticeable difference in terms of colors. The furniture used to have a deep color and strong.
The time of the Industrial Revolution was characterized, among other things, the large number of products manufactured. The production in general, thanks to the factories, far exceeded that of the past. This extraordinary increase also included the manufacture of furniture. Called fine furniture were affected by this mass production. The carpenters who were those people who built furniture with antique styles like Victorian furniture, began to shrink until they could not compete with those who used their work machines. There is no doubt that the Industrial Revolution had a major impact on the manufacture of furniture and was also notable was the homogeneity that from that time in North America and Europe.
