Survival Tips After Divorce


Do you know your rights when dealing with alimony, child support and marital property? These questions are critical when it comes to a divorce.

The divorce process is like war in most cases. You have to be prepared for battle. Before you even consider filing for divorce, see a minimum of three to find divorce lawyers' fees in advance. Find a good counselor divorce from the beginning. Most cities have legal aid societies and many lawyers offer free consultations. Also, meet with your accountant to understand the tax consequences and other issues related to the valuation of property, retirement plans, stocks, etc..

Consider the time of your divorce. If your spouse owes you a bonus or raise, wait until you pay before filing for divorce, to avoid any allegation of your marital property.
