The Business of Art Workshop: Creating your own job security

Recent articles suggest that many Americans work overtime for free. Especially with salaried jobs that are based on the hourly wage for 40 hours a week, most hard working career minded people who are willing to stay long past the 8-hour workday. They do not want to feel useless. But, on average almost a full extra day a week.

If they were to leave exactly when their eight hours were up, they think their boss is looking for and will consider them lazy to leave at the right time. That mentality to have! If you get paid for 8 hours a day, you should put your nose to the grindstone and your finished work so you can start on time. This should not be considered in all slack.

But, more hard working career minded individuals are always thinking about job security and promotion. They think that if they give all that free time that you will pay for one day in the long run. Budget cuts do not enter their minds. Cut backs and downsizing is not part of their plan.

If you were to flip the script around, you find that working for yourself will produce much better results. The execution of a downtown art studio as I do, I still have time for my children. I have time for many things and my center of a thriving art studio.

I set my own hours. I can work around the program running all the small labs at different times of day. Can I afford to put in about 4 or 5 hours a day and be done. The rest of the day is me doing what I want.

Running a central laboratory for 4 or 5 hours spread throughout the day allows me enough time to teach hundreds of students. It is not difficult, especially when you put about 10 students in a class. This is a class small enough to track the growth of all. And 'well enough to predict a thriving art studio.

I'm putting my life and my future in my hands. I'm not counting on a future security work for me. I'm not counting on something that may or may not be there regardless of my contribution. If I work my core art shop properly, will be there for years to come. This is the type of security that I need .......
